BEN MURRAY tops the bill as Jersey’s boxers bid to lift the Capita Gold Cup ahead of a South of England Select on Saturday evening.

It promises to be an excellent climax to the sell-out Jersey Dinner Boxing Club show at Hotel L’Horizon, which has former twice world heavyweight champion ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon as one of the guests of honour. Murray, who experienced a bit of a hiccup in a narrow defeat against the highly-rated Irish Open champion Eric Donovan in Guernsey recently, is training well and is in positive frame of mind for a three rounds of three minutes encounter with Ross Payne of Crawley.

Captain Murray, touted to turn professional at some point, is toying with the idea of moving up to lightweight for the ABA championships, but stays at the weight below for this promising contest which will be the last of eight bouts.

With this being the first amateur show in Jersey for quite a while it will be interesting to see how sharp the Island boxers have kept.
