PLANS to convert a burnt-out chapel in St Helier into flats have been approved, but the design has been changed and no longer resembles a nine-storey glass tower.
Amended plans to build 58 one- and two-bedroom flats at Wesley Chapel in Wesley Street and preserve the façade of the 19th-century building have been approved by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.
The chapel, which was built in 1876 and closed as a chapel in 1956, was used as an electrical wholesale outlet when the interior, roof and windows were destroyed by a fire in January last year.
Julienne Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Style Group, originally applied to Planning for 62 flats contained in two four-storey apartment blocks on either side of a refurbished façade and a nine-storey glass block behind the chapel.
