THE Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, will retire in June.
Sir Philip told Members as today’s States sitting began that he had received permission from the Queen to retire in 2009 after almost 15 years as Bailiff. He has sat in the States since 1972 as the Deputy for Grouville, Solicitor General, Attorney General, Deputy Bailiff and Bailiff. His announcement, and a tribute paid to him by Chief Minister Frank Walker immediately afterwards, were greeted with thunderous stamping by Members — the traditional way that States Members signify their approval in the Chamber.
‘I shall be retiring at the end of June next year,’ Sir Philip told the House.
‘I shall have been in office for nearly 15 years, and I have decided that the time is right to make way for my successor.’
