DEPUTY Alan Breckon was celebrating after coming a close second to Ian Le Marquand.
The chairman of the Jersey Consumer Council was sixth when the results started being announced but it was his home parish of St Saviour which rocketed him up to second place with over 1,500 votes. By the time St Helier had counted all their votes, he had a total of 10,273 votes to Mr Le Marquand’s 14,238.
He described the result as ‘tremendous’ and said that he wanted to thank the voters for their support. He said that he was not interested in a ministerial position in the States Chamber, but wanted to address the grass roots issues in the Island for the ordinary man in his new role as Senator.
He is currently chairman of the Health, Social Security and Housing Scrutiny panel and plans to carry on campaigning for Islanders on everyday issues. ‘I have no illusions of grandeur and it is not about the title for me, it is about what I have always done which is applying common sense to problems,’ he said. ‘There are difficult times ahead in the next six years but we have to deal with the ordinary issues and address some of these such as consumer stuff, housing issues and income support.’
