It’s not another supermarket we need – it’s a wider choice

From Ray Whittingham.
I WRITE with reference to your article (JEP, 19 September) on a third supermarket for the Island and to the very small percentage of Islanders who will receive the survey.
Although your article implies that we have only two supermarkets, I do count Marks and Spencer as an individual supermarket, even though franchised, as it does sell its own products, and we do have numerous other supermarkets around the Island, albeit mostly under the umbrella of Le Riche, as well as the smaller outlets like Spar. I do not think it’s a question of needing another supermarket; what we need is a different choice.
With all the supermarkets and outlets we have apart from Marks and Spencer, they all sell more or less the same brands at more or less the same price, and you can rest assured that even if one of the UK chains were allowed in, their prices would not be as cheap as they are in the UK, the old nutmeg of freight charges being likely to kick in.
For a completely different choice of products, we need to be looking for a good European chain, and I know its been muted before, but someone like Carrefour, who cover a wide range of products, would survive well in an out-of-town location. Although this would also incur freight charges, these would not be anything like as much as those
from the UK. It would also help to sustain a second ferry company like HD on the French route.
I do hope that the survey asks not only if another supermarket is required, but also who and, more importantly, from where.
