Stop telling us what we should be paying in overseas aid, Deputy
Share this:
From Gwen Tucker.
I AM sick to death of Deputy Jackie Huet (JEP, 6 August) telling us what we should be paying as overseas aid.
Does this woman not know that until we look after our own we cannot possibly agree to give anything like £24 million to anyone?
A few examples are income support, pensioners, free child care, disabled people, places for the young, housing and GST.
May I make a suggestion to the Deputy? Why does she not go to all the wealthy people of this Island – and there are many of them – and ask them to give 10% of all interest made on their wealth? That should raise a few million pounds. Then they could tell all the world what they have done and give themselves a pat on the back. Then Deputy Huet could stop asking us to go without.
Just one other point: all rich countries and islands have given overseas aid for decades, so please tell me why they are still no better off today than they were 40 years ago. Where has all that money gone to, and who has benefited from it?
