TAXPAYERS will have to cover the £1.4m bill for tipping excavated topsoil from the underground car park at Dandara’s Waterfront housing development.

Under the terms of the 2003 Les Pas deal, the States have to pick up the cost of tipping charges for two floors of underground parking on the Castle Quay site.

The lost fee in tipping charges, for about 70,000 cubic metres that will be removed from the site, will run to around £1.4m.

The cost would have been around £1m, but Environment Minister Freddie Cohen has approved a planning application by Dandara for an extra floor of underground car parking. The extra floor – around 109 spaces – will increase the cost by almost £400,000.
