Island commando dies on hike

A JERSEY Royal Marine commando has died while on a punishing training course to be part of the elite Special Boat Service, the sister unit of the SAS.

Benjamin Poole (26), of St Brelade, reportedly collapsed of heat exhaustion on Monday while training on the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, in temperatures of more than 27°C.

The former Hautlieu pupil, who had two brothers and a girlfriend, had been taking part in an 18-mile hike around the gruelling course.

Nicholas Poole, his father, said: ‘This is a sad time for the family and nothing more than a tragic accident. We had been speaking to our son 24 hours before he died. He knew what he was getting involved with when applying for this course, and, as far as we are concerned, there is no one to blame.’
