THE soaring daily cost of motoring is causing concern among many readers.
The Fair Play team is pleased to announce therefore that it has spoken to a couple of garages who are determined to push down prices.
Both Motor Mall and Freelance Motors have cut the price of their fuel in a bid to try to force their suppliers to reduce costs.
Yesterday they both started selling petrol for 89.9 pence a litre and diesel for 99.9 pence a litre for all customers, irrespective of whether they have a discount card.
Those prices include fuel duty at 40.92p per litre and three per cent GST and will remain at that level until at least next Tuesday.
Ashley Dee, the general manager at the Mont à l’Abbé garage (pictured) said that the move was to demonstrate to fuel suppliers that the wholesale cost of petrol and diesel was still far too high in the Island. ‘We’re going to demonstrate to our suppliers that if they reduce fuel costs, overall petrol and diesel sales will rise at the pumps,’ he said. ‘This has to be good news for everyone involved, particularly the consumer, who is constantly suffering from global price increases of oil.’
He added: ‘By reducing our prices so much, we are nearly £1 a gallon cheaper than many suppliers on the Island. We will hold the rock bottom prices for 7 days and monitor the increase in litres sold over that period. We’ll then take that to our suppliers in support of our case to reduce wholesale fuel costs. The more fuel we can sell at the reduced price, the stronger our case will be.’
Meanwhile Martin Gurren, the managing director of the Freelance Motor Group at Augrès in Trinity (picture below)was equally determined to give Islanders a good deal. ‘We also agree that fuel is too expensive,’ he said, adding: ‘We’d like to help the residents of Jersey and we are going to match Motor Mall’s offer, also until next Tuesday.
