IT was standing room only in the Royal Court yesterday as the Island’s first female Assistant Magistrate was sworn into her new role in front of 100 members of Jersey’s judiciary, family and friends.
Former police legal adviser Bridget Shaw will take up her new role on the Magistrate’s Court bench today along with Acting Magistrate Advocate Richard Falle.
Speaking to a packed court room yesterday, Mrs Shaw jovially said: ‘How on earth did I get here? How did a Rector’s wife with two children come to where I am today?’
The qualified solicitor, who moved to Jersey in 1997 when her husband, David, took up the appointment as Rector of St Clement, said that she was ‘deeply honoured’ to be appointed as the new Assistant Magistrate. ‘I have been sworn in to administer justice soundly and swiftly to the rich and poor, regardless of the person,’ she said.
