A MULTI-MILLIONAIRE oil tycoon and former special forces soldier who once controlled one of the world’s most high-profile mercenary armies has become a tax exile in Jersey.

Tony Buckingham (56), who along with jailed mercenary Simon Mann was a leading figure in the ‘private military contractor’ Executive Outcomes in the 1990s, is believed to have been granted 1(1)k status late last year.

He has since bought a landmark property in the Island and the company of which he is the chief executive officer, Heritage Oil, has an office in the Parade.

The company specialises in oil and gas exploration in high-risk hotspots including Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Pakistan and Mali. Before moving to Jersey, Mr Buckingham was a Guernsey resident. He was given the right to reside in Jersey by Housing Minister Terry Le Main, who has the final say as to who is granted 1(1)k wealthy immigrant status.
