Customs and Immigration’s annual report for last year shows that officers in the service seized just over £700,000 of drugs compared to almost ?5 million two years before.

It is understood that the dramatic drop was caused by a split at the Joint Intelligence Bureau, made up of both Customs and States police officers, following a criminal investigation of Customs and Immigration officers by the police.

Their drug operational capability was reduced to a minimum for the last four months of 2007 after a number of officers were removed from their front-line duties.
