Since the start of the year, drivers of heavy goods vehicles, medium goods vehicles and trailers weighing more than 3.5 tonnes have been liable to a £5,000 fine if they do not carry a ’30’ disc on the back.

But St Clement Deputy Gerard Baudains led the States to overwhelmingly overturn the law – despite protests from Transport Minister Guy de Faye – by 36 votes to three.

‘This is possibly the most useless piece of bureaucracy that I have come across, and this Island is sinking under bureaucracy,’ said Deputy Baudains.
