It was a game when effort, planning and execution all came together and everything we attempted worked,’ said captain Paul Masterton.
‘It was one of those magical moments when everything went according to plan.
We had a shaky start for the first five or ten minutes but things settled down.
‘One doesn’t expect to be winning 10-1 at this stage but the first ten minutes looked like it was going to be hard-fought.
However, we were clearly the fitter side and moved the ball around quickly, kept possession and forced our way into their D.
We also won a lot of short corners and had a very successful short corner routine which gave us a lot of goals.’
The Investec-sponsored Jersey side put in a controlled display and soon began to dominate as the new-look midfield of Masterton, Conrad Evans, Ed Daubeney and Julian Gale gained almost full supremacy over the pitch.
Good build up play and ball retention, especially down the right from man of the match, Evans, led to sustained attacks with Peter Titterington and Nick Taylor making some telling crosses.
From a penalty corner Mark Bailey opened the scoring with a flick from close quarters.
Daubeney then scored and Bailey added a second – both goals also from short corners.
Jersey kept the pressure up at the resumption with another Daubeney penalty corner goal before Bailey secured his hat-trick with a penalty stroke awarded when Nick Taylor was hit on the head by the ball as the Oxford sweeper saved off the line.
Nothing could stop Taylor however, who took his revenge with two goals following short corner moves before Oxford pulled one back to make it 7-1.
In defence Jan Collins and Tim Nelson managed to keep Oxford out and diving saves from Paul Duckworth frustrated the opposition.
The best goal came from swift interplay between Masterton and Peter Taylor – the latter beating a row of defenders, rounding the keeper and lifting the ball into the roof of the net on the reverse side.
Peter’s brother, Nick, then secured his hat-trick with a shot from the top of the D.
The final blow for Oxford was a Titterington goal with a reverse stick sweep thanks to a Nick Taylor cross which ended the scoring at 10-1 and confirmed Jersey’s place in the last eight of this National competition where they will face Slough.
‘Slough have also had a big win in this competition, 12-1, so it will be a match of the heavyweights and will be really interesting to test our style of play against theirs,’ added Masterton.
The quarter-final match is on Sunday March 9 and although a home draw for Jersey, the match will be played at East Grinstead in Sussex.
