No luck for the Irish

Barry Beatson gave Jersey the lead on the half hour after Scott Devlin’s header was partially cleared off a goal-line.

Stuart Andr? nodded in a second following Craig Leitch’s corner on the right and then Marco Vieira made it 3-0 with a close-range volley following after an excellent run down Jersey’s right by Dave Le Roux.

It was tough luck on the Irish as they had defended really well all night and despite being tender in years they were quick, full of running and with tricky forwards they caused Jersey problems at times.

Jersey goalkeeper Gary Lloyd made a fine reflex save shortly before half time while second half replacement ‘keeper Craig Fletcher kept the Irish at bay with a couple of excellent blocks and a brilliant one-handed block to keep out a blockbuster of a shot following a fine run by defender Ross Redman.

Jersey manager Dave Kennedy said: ‘I think we had a hangover from Saturday; we did not play well at all.

We only played 50 per cent and I hope the players learn from that for when we get to Alderney.

‘Overall I was disappointed with the performance, that’s for sure.

We spoke about complacency before the game but there’s no getting away from it, that was a complacent performance.

‘We certainly looked a different side from Saturday when we played Reading.

We brought in fresh faces and younger boys and when they pull on a red shirt it should mean the world to them but it didn’t look that way at times.

‘You can put up with two or three bad performances but when you’ve got ten then it’s very hard to pick yourself out of the rut that we were in during the game.

‘The only positive for me was the third goal; it was the result of one of very few decent moves from us throughout.’

Northern Ireland manager Bob Ramsey said: ‘It was a very tough game for us; we just didn’t have the physical presence against a much bigger and stronger side.

‘There were positives for us because we created a number of good chances and I did not think we deserved to be beaten 3-0.

‘However, it was an enjoyable game, this is only our second game together and it was a positive performance; especially from the five boys who came in to replace those who were missed from win against Australia last week.’

The match was supported by the Wilde Family Office Ltd, Flybe, the Ambassadeur Hotel and Arup Rothwell.
