Karina Bisson conjured up three wins in five matches in the women’s singles, beating Hong Kong’s Peggy Ma, 21-16, Swaziland’s Karin Byars, 21-18 and South Africa’s Colleen Webb, 21-4.
That win over Webb was something special, because the South African looked impressive when she won the Atlantic singles title in Ayr last July.
Bisson also did well to take the host country’s great hope, Val Smith all the way to the wire – the 21-20 scoreline suggesting the result could have gone either way.
Her other defeat came against England’s hotly-tipped Ellen Falkner, a former winner of the WBT world indoor singles title, who won her first five games at a canter – but Bisson managed to score 16 shots against the Cambridgeshire star.
Suzie Dingle, well supported by Gaynor Thomas, Chris Grimes and Liz Cole, skipped the Jersey four to wins over Norfolk Island, the Cook Islands and Ireland, but slipped up against Spain and Hong Kong.
In the men’s pairs, Jamie MacDonald and Lee Nixon beat Brunei and Thailand, but lost to Malaysia, Ireland and Argentina, while Jersey trio Derek Boswell, Alan Shaw and Cyril Renouf only managed one win – against Argentina.
