Members of the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club were joined by others keen to see in the New Year with a bracing dip in the sea at 11 am yesterday. The group were then treated to tea, coffee and soup at St Clement’s sailing clubhouse.

JLDSC secretary Jenny Fitzgerald said that it was warmer than some years: ‘The sun was out and there wasn’t much wind so people weren’t coming out of the water shivering like they normally do even though the water was just 9.6 degrees. There were swimmers of all ages, from the youngest aged about eight or nine to over 70.

‘You are not allowed to wear a wetsuit, just your swimming costume and a pair of goggles.’
