With many people still on their Christmas and New Year break from work, the allure of the sale rails was strong and shoppers packed the stores of St Helier.

The first to start off the rush was fashion retailer Next in King Street which opened its doors to a queue of people at 5 am.

There were long queues at other stores as they opened at a more civilised hour during the morning.

Voisins department store waited until 10 am yesterday to welcome the masses.

Store owner Gerald Voisin said that there were long queues of people outside the shop waiting to get in.
