Police officers are investigating the fire, which took place in the main building of the derelict holiday camp, and believe that it was started maliciously.

Firefighters were called to the main building shortly before 6 am.

Two of them in breathing apparatus entered the building and the fire was brought under control within minutes and extinguished within half an hour.

The alarm was raised by the caretaker, who discovered it when leaving for work.

Due to the nature of the fire the police were informed and scenes of crime officers were at the site by 7.30 am. Their investigation is continuing.

Fire officer Robin King said: ‘Luckily there was a resident caretaker who spotted the blaze in its early stages.

‘His quick action by phoning the emergency services definitely averted a major fire.’
