Gerard Hayslop (26), of Burnley, Lancashire, was jailed for 12 months in Paris.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said that they were now applying for a European arrest warrant and were in talks with the French police to try to get Hayslop deported back to the UK.

The convicted paedophile was reported missing in August after disappearing from a St Martin campsite. Days earlier, he had failed to show up for a court appearance in Burnley at which he was due to be sentenced for making indecent images of children.

It is thought that Hayslop and his girlfriend, Louise Howarth-Lee, registered at the campsite under the aliases Andrew Keeble and Hannah Tye. They were last seen being dropped off by a taxi at Rozel on 10 August. A possible sighting of the couple getting out of a canoe on a beach in Normandy was reported the following day.
