Proposals by the Migration Advisory Group published today aim to get every man, woman and child in the Island signed up to a new index by 2014.
The proposals also seek to introduce new cards for all Islanders which will have to be shown by anyone wanting to rent or buy a home or get a job.
But the group, chaired by Deputy Ian Gorst, have stressed that the new cards will not be ‘identity cards’ and will contain only names, housing status and social security numbers. Newcomers to the Island will have to sign up as soon as they arrive, while Jersey residents will be gradually introduced to the index as they change jobs or move house.
