On his second final appearance, 21-year-old Alexander – who was defeated by England professional Keith Brewer in the final two years ago – came from 2-0 down to defeat Belgium’s Dave Verey 6-5 including a six-ball clearance in the final frame.

The International team and singles event also included the Channel Islands championships and team inter-insulars.

Organiser Paul Bolton said: ‘It was an exceptionally busy and excellent weekend; the standard gets better every year and for Chris to win the International singles was a fantastic result for him.

‘He’s only a young lad and he won a final which was first class.

Verey’s positional play was brilliant and Chris just edged it in the end.

‘Keith Brewer has won the title for the last four years but he did not come this time so he was unable to defend it.

‘The International team event was the closest ever with six of the seven teams still in the running to qualify for the semi-finals going into the final round-robin matches.

‘I felt really sorry for the Portuguese lads, they lost just one game and therefore narrowly missed out qualifying for the knock-out stages.’

Belgium won the team final against Bristol after beating Jersey A in the semi-final, the latter by winning five frames on the trot after trailing 6-3.

Josh Hinds suffered a second final defeat of the weekend in the International Junior event against to Guernsey’s James Kirk, South West Select player Debbie Chudley won the ladies’ crown.

Hinds gained revenge on Kirk beating him to win the Junior team match for Jersey against Guernsey while Taunton took the ladies’ honours against the South West Select.

Jersey completed a clean sweep of the inter-insular trophy matches for the first time ever, the men winning 11-8, the ladies 13-11 and the juniors 13-4.

Steve Palmer clinched the men’s win following a stunning finish; Christelle Le Toullec, Tracey Perreira and Laura Gicquel won the last three frames after the ladies trailed 11-10 while Josh Hinds won four of his five matches in the Juniors’ success.

The Channel Islands championships were also played at the weekend.

Josh Hinds, as reported on Friday, was beaten in the Junior final 5-3 by Guernsey’s Jez de la Haye while the all-Jersey ladies’ final resulted in another win for Laura Gicquel – 4-0 against Christelle Le Toullec including a total clearance in the final frame.

Seasoned campaigner Gary Cooke won the men’s championship for the fifth time following a 6-1 victory over surprise finalist Brett Campbell, who recently returned to the game.

In the semis, Cook defeated Ady Bougourd 5-4 while Campbell won 5-2 against Island cueist Andy Stentiford.
