Accies Arrows shoot to victory

Playing round-robin ten minute matches in Section A, they finished top of the group with 25 points as St Clement Saints took second, on goal difference, from Convent Red – both gaining 19 points.

Any one of the top three could have won but it was Accies who took a 5-4 victory over Convent, and a 4-3 win over St Clement, remaining unbeaten on the night to ensure overall success.

The top two teams from this section qualify to enter the South-West U14 Netball Tournament in the UK in March.

In Section B, St Clement Magpies finished top, beating St Lawrence Babes into second on goal difference after both teams scored 21 points.

Again a close battle between the top three ensued as Convent Blue finished third on 20 points.

The tournament, for girls in Year 7-9, follows on from the non-competitive youth netball that is played leading up to the tournament and allows clubs to play competitive netball with girls in their correct positions.

President of the Jersey Netball Association, Jackie Nelson, said: ‘Any of the top three teams could have won and the netball played was all of such a high calibre.

It was a superb tournament and the support from parents was excellent.

‘We’re very lucky in the netball association to have strength and talent flooding through and we seem to have got the setup right with girls moving into adult league netball in Year 10.

There has been a steady flow of good quality players going from youth to adult league and this seems set to continue.’

The teams finishing in the bottom two positions in Section A will now go down to Section B, with the top two teams from B replacing them for the youth netball that runs next year including the next Corefocus Youth Netball Tournament in March.

The Jersey under-11 teams made their Island debut last night featuring in section B, and although they weren’t playing for points Nelson said: ‘The quality was there and even though they were playing against girls who were two years older than them they still held their own and played some outstanding netball.

‘This is a great learning experience for them and next year they’ll be able to join the youth league.’
