The States voted 28 to 21 yesterday against changing the controversial 3% tax so that all food in shops and supermarkets would be zero-rated.

After losing the vote, Health Minister Ben Shenton promised to bring the proposition back to the new House following next year’s States elections.

Members also voted 33 to 16 against making books, magazines and newspapers exempt from tax.
