Midfield trio help Jersey sink Crostyx

Jersey, having also reached the third round of the England Hockey Cup this season, maintained their good form winning their third round tie away to the East Division One leaders following goals by Tom Millar (two), Mark Dicker, Stuart Ramskill and Nathan Maguire.

Jersey coach Shelagh Herbert said: ‘Crostyx are a good side who are unbeaten in their league but the quality of our performance and team play on the day was outstanding.

‘We created great opportunities off high tempo free flowing hockey and took our chances well.

Just as pleasingly was the way we defended as a unit because it is something we have worked on and it denied Crostyx the chance of getting into any rhythm.

‘Our midfield trio of Bill Aston, Stuart Ramskill and Mark Dicker put in a high energy and disciplined performance.

The hard work the squad are doing is paying off and I think our confidence and results show that.’

Jersey got off to a blistering start with Mike James, on the right, taking the game to Crostyx hard in the first ten minutes.

A good aerial ball from Robin Le Quesne opened up space for Peter Millar and Dicker whose skill won two penalty corners, the second of which was deserving of a penalty stroke.

A business-like Jersey had a shot cleared off the line but players responded positively by winning a third penalty corner which Dicker converted with an expert drag flick.

Nathan Maguire entered the fray from the bench and with his first two touches he was denied by the woodwork.

Crostyx gradually started to ask questions by playing good counter attacking hockey but Tom Millar helped Jersey increase their lead with two goals in two minutes.

His first, and Jersey’s second, came when Minty’s aerial pass deep out of defence found space for Luke Maguire, whose speed and skill combined well with Tom Millar whose excellent positioning and good technique finished the move off.

An impressive passing move, again involving Luke Maguire, resulted in Millar calmly slotting home Jersey’s third.

Late on Crostyx won several free hits resulting in a classy save from Jersey goalkeeper Garret O’Brien.

Crostyx pulled a goal back, on the counter attack, while Luke Maguire was denied by a good save.

Bradley Wherry put the ball into the attacking D and an alert Ramskill cleverly deflected it past the Crostyx ‘keeper for Jersey’s fourth.

Jersey were in control but they leaked a second goal after again losing possession.

Crostyx put some aerial balls into the Jersey D in the second half and they won two penalty corners which Dan Lundy and Simon Watling dealt with convincingly.

Jersey sealed the game in the 45th minute when the Maguire brothers combined well and Nathan converted from an acute angle.

Despite Jersey creating several more chances the score remained 5-2 in their favour.
