Board ban not such a swell idea for surfers

The Jersey Surfboard Club say the ban will create a ‘logistical nightmare’, while Heather Speller, mother of junior world surf kayak champion David Speller – who is currently taking part in an international contest in Spain – said that it could prevent him from being able to compete in future. ‘He faces not being able to take part in events like the worlds if he can’t get his kayaks there,’ she said. Assistant Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said the ban was a blow to a small but important sector of the tourism industry as well as residents who pursued their hobbies abroad. BA has announced from 6 November 2007 that it will not fly hang-gliders, windsurfing boards and sails, surfboards, kayaks or canoes, vaulting poles or javelins. In a website statement, BA says that due to the large size and handling complexities, some sporting equipment will not be accommodated through the airport baggage system or within the aircraft hold.
