Playing at Les Quennevais, Jersey started strongly with some promising moves but were on the back foot after 15 minutes when Guernsey captain Michelle Gilson beat Raydene Stracy with a skilful reverse flick into the top left corner of the goal.

The lead was doubled three minutes later as Emily Curtis passed to Hilary Stokes for a simple tap in – the Sarnians continuing to dictate play through to half time.

After the break, Jersey sought to take the game to their opponents however, despite a spell of strong attacks and pressure from Sarah Heelis, Shelagh Herbert and Shelagh Legg, they were unable to convert possession into goals.

Eventually their persistence paid off when Herbert forced a foul in the D and slotted home the resulting penalty corner.

Guernsey raised their game in the final quarter but were denied by further saves from Stracy, some timely interceptions from sweeper Helen Hansford, and relentless running and support from the rest of the Jersey team in spite of some very tired legs.

The match was played in the best of spirits and Jersey’s ladies can be proud of their performance.
