PC Jayson Lee (36) attended a hearing to determine matters of law relating to his upcoming trial, which is due to take place on 8 and 9 November. He pleads not guilty to three charges of causing unnecessary suffering to Rico, in breach of the Protection of Animals (Jersey) Law 1980 and the Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law. It is alleged that on 31 October last year at St Ouen’s Manor, Lee struck Rico with his knee, twisted the dog’s scruff, punched the dog in the nose and squeezed its testicles. On 27 February this year at the former Pontin’s site in St Ouen, he is alleged to have punched the dog on its head. And on 6 March at the Scout Hut, St Ouen, he is accused of striking Rico with his dog lead and chain across the nose. Lee’s defence lawyer, Advocate Julian Gollop, yesterday asked that Magistrate Ian Le Marquand limit the amount of witness evidence available to the prosecution, to prevent prejudice to Lee. For the prosecution, however, legal adviser Howard Sharp claimed that such information would directly correlate with important points the prosecution wished to make. Mr Le Marquand made an order preventing further reporting of the exact details of the legal arguments.
