Island yachts hit by French port blockade

About a dozen trawlers blocked the entrance to the port of St Vaast La Hougue yesterday afternoon and trapped the yachts taking part in the Tour des Ports inside, leaving more than 700 crew members in the harbour. Peter Funk, who is skippering the Dahler 39 yacht Cordon Bleu, said that the fleet was ready to go when the French fishing boats appeared and blockaded the entrance to the port. Mr Funk said that the trawlers sat in position for one whole tide. As a result, nothing could get in or out of the port. He said that according to local reports, the fishermen had taken the action in sympathy with a colleague who was fined for landing the wrong fish at the wrong time of year. And he said that from the reports he had read the fishermen were seeking the abandonment of fishing quotas.
