Anti-GST rally call

Anti-GST rally call

The Consumer Council is inviting people to the Royal Square to show the States how many people are against the introduction of the three per cent tax next year. Led by Consumer Council chairman Deputy Alan Breckon, the gathering on Saturday 8 September coincides with the start of a new States sitting after the summer recess, when the final details of GST are set to be debated. But his plans have increased calls for the role of the Consumer Council to investigated. Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur responded to the call for a rally by asking: ‘Is their focus to be a watchdog looking after the consumer, or are they aiming to be a political pressure group? I find it difficult to see how the States can appoint a States Member as chairman of the consumer council, and fund the council, if the intention is for the council to be a political organisation.’
