World class billiards players head for First Tower

The quintet of Guy Heys, Martyn Le Gallais, Chris Alexander, Joe Stewart and Darren Malzard will be playing in a series of 45-minute matches against leading players from around England.

The event, at First Tower Institute on Saturday and Sunday, is the final match in a series of five with the players competing for cash prizes.

Jersey snooker referee Gary Truscott has helped to bring the event to the Island together with England senior referee and Jersey team manager David Joyce.

Truscott said: ‘This is a first for Jersey and it promises to be a wonderful event both for the visiting players, our players and the spectators.

‘Chris Shutt is currently ranked No 1 in England and he will be here.

He is a class player, having been world professional champion in 2005.

He has already won two EBOS events this season and he is coming with the aim of making it a hat-trick.’ Shutt, who holds the world record score of 1,382 points in a 90-minute match, has scored 11 breaks of over 300 in his career, including one of 827 in the British Championship eight years ago.

Truscott added: ‘Anyone who loves cue sports will be amazed by the standard.

I’m really looking forward to the weekend and urge people to come down and have a look at top-class players playing the game.’ A total of 24 players will be competing in the tournament.

Saturday’s round-robin matches will be of 60 minutes’ duration each, with the top 16 qualifying for Sunday’s matches, which will be over 90 minutes.

Education, Sport and Culture and Jersey Tourism, as well as a host of other sponors, are supporting the event, which will be played between 10 am and 7 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

There is also a practice session for the players on Friday evening from 7 pm.
