But it is not noisy parties, high hedges or parking that are worrying Mark and Elaine Wharton, it is the 13-house development being built in their back yard. When the Whartons bought their home on Route des Bagot they went through the usual checks with the Planning department and were told there were no applications of ‘material relevance’ to their new home. So they were shocked when they found out that next-door Dudley House was being redeveloped as 13 houses, one of which will be joined to their exterior wall. ‘When they applied to put new windows on the houses and put a site notice up, we realised,’ he said. ‘The development connects to our back wall and one of our outhouses is actually in their plans for the site. If we knew about it we would not have bought the house.’ Mr Wharton said that the system had failed because he was not told about the development by the parish or Planning.
