His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent made local history when he joined Lieut-Governor Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway in attending the ceremony at Westmount, which has become an important part of the Island’s Liberation Day commemorations. It was also the first time that a Lieut-Governor has attended. Ceremony organiser Gary Font, the son of forced worker and Spanish Republican Francisco Font, said it was a great honour to welcome the Duke, the Lieut-Governor and the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache. ‘We gather here to remember foreign forced workers,’ said Mr Font. ‘They came from all walks of life and nationalities. So many of them suffered the brutality of the Organisation Todt. We also pay tribute to those who freed Jersey and the world from tyranny.’ The first three wreaths were laid by the Duke of Kent, the Lieut-Governor and the Bailiff to the sound of bagpipes.
