His Royal Highness arrived with the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, and the Lieut-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway. The Duke was escorted around the Liberation Suite at the hotel where groups of Islanders and veterans were eager to tell him their stories. Among the people sharing their experiences with the Royal visitor was Eric Le Conte who lived in the Island during the Occupation and remembers Liberation Day vividly. ‘We didn’t know what was going to happen,’ he said. ‘We knew liberating forces were coming but weren’t sure when.’
