Hundreds of passengers were affected yesterday as their flights were delayed or cancelled and the Airport was kept open until 11.30 pm while the backlog was cleared. And the JEP has discovered that as well as thick fog and wind, further delays are due to a failure of the £100,000 instrument landing system (ILS) for aircraft approaching from the west. The equipment guides planes in foggy weather and although it has been repaired it cannot be used until Thursday. Assistant Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean explained that the ILS failed several weeks ago but has not been a problem until now because of the good weather. There have been no problems when aircraft have been landing from the east. He explained that the equipment needed to be tested by the Civil Aviation Authority before it could be made operational.
