A planning application has been made by the Housing department to build two two-storey homes on the site.

The strip of land formed part of Highbury House, a property at the top of Rue à la Dame which was compulsorily purchased for housing in 1996, subsequently demolished and turned into gardens.

Housing Minister Terry Le Main said that the site had a rather complicated history.

‘We bought it many years ago for £130,000 on the basis that it was to be for housing, but the owner, Jimmy Barker, says that he never cashed the cheque.

‘We have put an application in and it is highly likely that the homes will go to special needs tenants, as it is near Les Amis and all the shops.

There is a possibility that it will go to one of the housing trusts.’
