The new seating and café area opposite the town Post Office, that was once dominated by a taxi rank and public toilets, was declared open as passers-by made their way home from work.
Sir Philip Bailhache said that he was pleased to see the area restored.
He said: ‘We do not have many monuments in Jersey, and it is sad when one of the few important monuments falls into a state of neglect.
‘Thus it was with this fine obelisk, erected in the 19th century to honour the memory of Pierre Le Sueur, a highly successful Constable of St Helier, Member of the States, and advocate of the Royal Court.
‘It seemed for years to be lost in the shadow of the rather grimy public toilets and sandwiched between two roads.
But now here it is, restored to its former glory and a monument of which we can all be proud.’
