The presentation for the best private wealth book was made by BBC journalist John Humphries at a dinner at London’s Grosvenor House last week.

The US architects of the book, Butterworths Guide to US/UK Private Wealth Tax Planning, were Mr Williams and Richard P Layman of the Cleveland-based US law firm Jones Day.

Rick Layman, who died last April, was the creative force behind it, while Dawn Nicholson, an Ernst & Young solicitor, wrote the UK sections.

The book is an extensive rewrite of an earlier reference work known in the City as The Green Book.

It compares US and UK income, capital gains, gift, inheritance and excise tax systems, with major chapters on integrated US and UK planning for families or offshore trusts with US spouses, beneficiaries, settlors or assets.

Mr Humphries described Butterworths Guide as a ‘ground-breaking achievement.

Written for offshore bankers and trustees as well as City lawyers, one prominent City law firm reviewer said ‘This is not a book for the library.

It is a book to keep on your desk.
