Senator Freddie Cohen said Members will have to approve the rezoning of sites for sheltered accommodation, but added that the States have a ‘social and moral obligation’ to provide 500 homes over the next 18 months.
The need for 500 sheltered homes was revealed by Housing Minister Terry Le Main during the Business Plan debate on Wednesday.
He called the lack of retirement accommodation ‘desperate’ and told Members they had to take the shortfall very seriously.
Senator Cohen says the 45/55 split that has required developers to build some homes for social housing when they construct first-time buyer homes has failed to deliver the amount of retirement homes the Island needs.
