Fort William, now privately owned, has been situated on the common for nearly two centuries after being built in the 19th century to protect against French invasion.
But because it was built during a time of war, and the records of its construction have long been lost, no one was really sure how much of the land surrounding Fort William actually belonged to the fort’s owners.
Last Thursday the Chefs Tenants du Fief de la Reine, are a group of parishioners who run Grouville Common, finally approved the boundaries.
And Rod Amy, the chairman of the Chefs Tenants, who have run the common according to rights dating back to the middle ages, said that this was simply part of a long-term process of tidying up the laws and boundaries.
