The principal of St Brelade’s College, Donald Brown, said that 18 per cent more students – mostly German, French, Swiss and Spanish – had enrolled this year.

‘So far this year more than 1,500 foreign students representing 23 different countries have booked languages courses at the college.

Some new students come from as far afield as Japan, Ecuador, Finland, Latvia, Kyrgystan and Tonga,’ he said.

Mr Brown attributed the increase in French students to the new TGV link from Paris to St Malo, where the majority of French students catch the boat.

The Island’s reputation as a safe place with plenty of leisure activities also proved to be a winning factor.
