No other person was present at the time of the incident outside her home in St John, and there were no suspicious circumstances in what was described by the Deputy Viscount, Peter de Gruchy, as a very tragic accident.
It happened on the afternoon of Friday 24 February – a very cold day on which it had snowed earlier.
Although Mrs Mooney originally cancelled lunch with a friend, she decided nearer the time to attend.
Her car, a new Ford Fiesta Zetec, was parked facing the front of the house.
It was on flat ground, at a slight angle.
Mrs Mooney is believed to have opened the driver’s door and leant into it to start the vehicle – her upper body was inside the car and her lower body outside it.
Her feet were on the ground.
The car was in gear, though.
Its engine started and it travelled forwards.
As the open car door hit the front corner of the house, it closed on Mrs Mooney’s torso, trapping her when the engine stalled and the car stopped moving.
