The Council of Ministers want to change the rules on political eligibility to allow more people who work for the States to take part in Island politics, including civil servants up to grade 11.

At the moment, most public sector staff are restricted from standing for election, expressing political views and even canvassing at election time.

Only manual workers, education staff, medical workers, airport staff and postal workers are allowed to do so.

But the Council of Ministers has lodged a proposition on ‘Political Activities By States Employees’ which would open up the proportion of States staff able to get involved.
