Describing last year as the worst of his life, Mr Stephens, who has managed the theatre since it reopened in 2000, said: ‘I think to have struggled through all the pain and difficulties and the obstacles last year, to be having to leave as we’re just turning a corner is upsetting.’ Mr Stephens’ comments came after a press conference at the theatre yesterday at which it was announced that the Opera House had turned a £146,000 deficit in 2004 into a surplus of £29,000 at the end of 2005 and, for the first time, had made a profit on visiting shows amounting to £75,000 – although with a much-reduced professional programme and extended dark periods.
