Polls are being held today in all three St Helier districts, St Saviour districts 1 and 2, both St Brelade districts, St Mary, St John, St Lawrence and St Clement to decide 23 seats in the first States Assembly under ministerial government.

Some new faces in the Chamber are guaranteed, as Deputies Phil Rondel, Maurice Dubras, Jennifer Bridge, Gerald Voisin, Lyndon Farnham and Geoffrey Grime are all bowing out of the States and Deputy Terry Le Main has moved up to the Senatorial benches.

Six Deputies, including a replacement for retiring Trinity Deputy David Crespel, have already been re-elected, having run unopposed in their districts.

And at least one of the current Assembly will be bowing out, as St Helier No 1 district includes four sitting candidates but only three seats.

After a voter registration drive by Privileges and Procedures which saw 8,000 more names added to the electoral roll but only 2,000 more actual votes, hopes for a good turn-out look likely to be dashed.

If the evidence of the St Helier hustings meetings is anything to go by, the majority of registered voters will not be exercising their right to choose their representatives today.
