The Senator, a long-term critic of the decisions which led to the building of the underpass, the hotel and the leisure centre, said that popular opposition to the waterfront and the changing face of St Helier has been vindicated by the scathing criticism of past waterfront planning contained in an Urban Character appraisal released yesterday.
‘Those States Members responsible for the mess, the lost opportunities, the damage to our heritage, the dissolution of town quality of life, the squandering of the waterfront opportunities, the destruction of Jersey character – owe the people of Jersey an apology.
‘As a community we must now begin the task of recovering our town from years of compounded errors.
If we are to succeed in that task we must recognise the folly that has brought us to this point so as not to repeat past mistakes,’ said the Senator.
The St Helier Urban Character Appraisal criticised the existing waterfront developments for being inept and of low quality and dated.
The report also says that they contribute little to the vitality of St Helier.
