Advocate Andrew Bridgeford’s 1066: The Hidden History of the Bayeux Tapestry was published to critical acclaim in Britain last March and now a new French translation has created equal interest across the Channel – despite the book’s claims that the 70-metre embroidery was made in England and actually undermines the Norman claim to the throne.
The book received a glowing review from Premier Roman-winning author Jean Fran?oir Kervéan on the French television station Canal Plus and it was chosen as ‘un vrai coup de coeur’ by larger-than-life bookshop owner Gerard Collard, a commentator on the station LCI.
The French-language Swiss newspaper, Le Courrier, described it as ‘un voyage érudit et palpitant au XIe siècle’ and last week Mr Bridgeford travelled to Paris to conduct an interview with Ouest France, the leading daily newspaper for the West of France.
