Despite being two places lower down the table than they were on Monday, Gus McKinnon, who lost to the Isle of Man two sets to nil, was full of praise for his fellow players last night.
‘Gean (O’Neil) and Cyril (Renouf) beat a strong Israeli side,’ he said, ‘and then Gean won her match against a Portuguese player, on home territory.
In my game I’ve no complaints, because the chap I was playing against was brilliant; he had his first bowl on the jack every time.
‘Chrissie Grimes and Gean are playing great, Cyril’s good – and I’m just hanging in there.
‘Our win against Israel was especially pleasing, because the pair they were playing are virtually professionals.
‘Having said that, at this level there are no easy countries.’ While the Home Countries are being cheered on by ex-pats who live in Portugal, Scotland have gone into the lead with 98 points.
Behind them are Ireland with 94, Wales with 90, England with 86 and then Jersey with 80.
