The 17-year-old Jersey girl will join the 12-strong national team for the European Badminton Tournament in Cardiff on 1 December.

It comes after her first gold medal in a senior tournament in Essex last weekend partnering another England player, Rachael Howard, and is another step along the road to the 2012 Olympics in London.

Both Agathangelou and her regular doubles partner Jenny Wallwork – they are the European Under-19 champions – are being groomed for the Games.

Wallwork is also among the six men and six women named for the Cardiff tournament.

But Agathangelolu will again partner Howard in the doubles and will team up with Dean George in the mixed.

Said Agathangelou: ‘Yes, I’m looking forward to playing in Cardiff, it will be good experience for me.

‘I’ve been doing a lot of training before and after school and it’s great to be chosen – I think they’ve just done it to give me the experience but it shows I’m getting there.’ Agathangelou is at boarding school in England and trains with Team Bath at Bath University, a base for many of the country’s top players and coaches Said her mother Chantelle this morning: ‘Mariana and Jenny have been put with older players to see how they cope.

‘They are both being groomed for the Olympics.

She’s delighted that she’s been picked and that all her hard work is being rewarded – she’s been training really hard.’
