Following the launch of the Side By Side Earthquake Appeal yesterday, people have already begun getting in touch with charity chairman Mike Wavell to discuss what they can do to help.

He said: ‘I had a couple of phone calls last night, and I hope that people will start coming out of the woodwork to organise some fund-raising events.

They are great for our community, and it would be good if we could come together again, as we did for the tsunami.’ Mr Wavell said that Side By Side were meeting on Thursday to discuss fund-raising ideas.

He said: ‘The secure collecting boxes that were made by prisoners after the tsunami can be rebranded.

We just want to get people motivated in the same way as before.

It gave everybody great satisfaction, as they had to work together, and it wasn’t just throwing money in a tin.

‘I know that the Island’s schools do a lot, but it would be great it they could consider this as one of their worthy causes.

It would be a great lesson for students in schools to know what is happening around the world.’ He said that any money raised would go towards directly supporting a community project in one of the affected regions of Pakistan, northern India and the disputed territory of Kashmir.

‘Side By Side is all about bringing people together,’ he said.

‘With the tsunami, everybody just threw everything behind it, and this is just as devastating.’ Mr Wavell said that anyone interested in organising a fund-raising event should telephone him on 736415 or 725321.

‘People with ideas should get in touch so that we can help promote and support the event as well as orchestrate things.

We have got the venue of Aquila Road, which is available for anybody who wants to put on an event.’ Donations can be made directly to the Side By Side bank account, which is held at Barclays, Library Place, account number 50705365.

Alternatively, you could make donations by cheques made payable to Jersey Side By Side.

They can be sent to treasurer Gill Phillips at Ravenscroft, St Saviour’s Hill, St Saviour JE2 7LF.
